The city appeared enormous, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into London before you kick off your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new life in the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks ahead of schedule or just before classes begin, here’s the insight I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodations

Prevent expensive hotel bills by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was luckier than most, as the best places fill up quickly. It’s wise to choose a location near your campus or along a convenient Tube line to lessen long travel times for early morning lectures.

Crucial Life Administration

Upon reaching London, make these tasks your priority:

Money transfers – International students require cost-effective methods to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Make sure to acquire a UK SIM card quickly to have data for navigation.

Setting up a bank account – Digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are speedy and cater to students, making them ideal for everyday transactions and receiving part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This provides access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. It’s best to obtain it as soon as possible.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join the ones that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I formed close friendships during impromptu campus tours and society stalls. Your first week shapes the experience of your university life.

Navigating London Wisely

At first, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Avoid making the same mistake by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city’s hidden treasures and rich culture.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel quite intense, particularly initially. Having a personal comfort space is beneficial – for me, it’s a nearby park where I go to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes from me, where I often relax watching a movie weekly.

Seek out your own comforting locales, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, for a place to recharge and refresh.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee joints.

Explore notable landmarks, visit free museums, and take a double-decker bus ride for the scenery. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting slightly lost!

Final Pointers for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – many shops charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas do not stand up well against wind.

Participate in unique events – they can lead to memorable stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already a step ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to-imperial/" rel="

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time can be quite overwhelming.
