The city felt immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I didn’t know where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before starting at Imperial, ensuring you enjoy this fresh chapter in the city.

Whether you get in weeks ahead or just before classes begin, here’s the advice I wish was shared with me when I arrived.

Secure Your Accommodation First

Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but not everybody does. The prime locations are snatched up quickly! Try to find somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since long journeys are not ideal for early morning lectures.

Key Life Administration

Once you arrive in London, tackle these crucial tasks promptly:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical way to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – make sure you have internet access for navigation. Get a UK SIM card and data package soon after your arrival.

Bank account establishment – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are speedy and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it at the earliest opportunity.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time when you meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Sign up for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week will set the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don’t follow my lead. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking is still the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London boasts hidden treasures waiting to be discovered through exploration.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally heavy at first. Having a comforting place can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence, which I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I indulge in a movie weekly.

Identify your own comfort areas, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots offer essential havens for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas around your campus and residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks and make the most of your weekends by discovering new places. Visit free museums, enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and roam without a specific destination. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering aimlessly!

Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial

Bring a reusable bag – shops often impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against strong winds.

Participate in unique events – they will make great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a normal feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start crafting your London story one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in.
