Stepping into London was quite an experience. The city struck me as vast, noisy, and energetic. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here\u2019s how to set your life in London on the right path before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor all the city has to offer.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks ahead of time or just right before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the counsel I wish had been shared with me.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent high hotel costs by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The best options tend to be snapped up quickly! Strive to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line since lengthy commutes are not ideal for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Get essentials sorted<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, take care of these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfer \u2013 as an international student, seek out an efficient and cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is crucial for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Open a bank account \u2013 while some banks ask for a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly for students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time employment payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this card grants you access to on-campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The significance of the first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s when you encounter flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re feeling shy, make an effort to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society showcases. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to an exhausting nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your safe havens<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to spot can be comforting \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. The O2, just ten minutes away, is another beloved place for watching films and relaxing.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own refuges, whether that\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can recharge and find peace.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee joints.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy rides on the red double-decker buses. Meander without a set plan; some of your fondest memories will emerge from those moments of spontaneity.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before launching at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Keep a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t hold up against the wind.<\/li>\n
