The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on how to start. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance for settling into London before classes at Imperial begin, helping you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Book your housing ahead of time to steer clear of costly hotels. I was lucky, but not all are. The finest places vanish swiftly! Search for accommodations close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning lectures.

Essential Life Settling

Upon arriving in London, tackle these key matters without delay:

Money Transfers – As an international student, find an economical method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better rates.

UK SIM Card – Get one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and tailored for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID Card – This is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student journey. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, attempt to engage. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.

Navigate London Efficiently

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London, struggling to grasp the Tube and bus systems. It was memorable yet chaotic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cost-effective travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and unearth hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Spots

London can feel emotionally intense. Having a favorite comfort area is beneficial. For me, it’s the park close to my home and the O2 for weekly cinema outings. Discover your own relaxing spots, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining locations. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit aimlessly!

Final Suggestions

Carry a reusable bag – shops impose fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t ideal for windy rain.

Attend unconventional events – they provide memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.

There’s no requirement to have everything sorted out from the outset. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead compared to where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

<p class="imp-post__footer__

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a lot to take in.
