Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in with its enormity and frenetic pace. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to stress. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London prior to your studies at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re here early or just in time for term, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had gotten.<\/p>\n

Secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By arranging your housing in advance, you can evade pricey hotel costs. I was lucky in that regard, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Aim to find a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Essential life admin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Take care of these vital tasks soon after arriving in London:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, you’ll need an efficient method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your inaugural week at Imperial is key for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Get involved with Welcome Week to check out more than 350 student-run clubs and societies.<\/p>\n

          Even if you\u2019re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will set the pace for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Smart travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          In my first week, I covered nine kilometers across London because of confusion with the Tube and buses. Don\u2019t replicate my error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fare travel.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be mentally taxing. Finding a comforting location is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park. I go there daily to unwind. My secondary location is the O2 for weekly movie outings.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own havens, whether it\u2019s a cafe or bookstore, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

          Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Get acquainted with your campus and surrounding areas. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots you favor.<\/p>\n

          Explore iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your best experiences will stem from getting slightly lost.<\/p>\n

          Concluding advice for starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective in gusty winds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Participate in unique events \u2013 they create wonderful stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience at the onset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted from the get-go. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I started. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
