If you’re about to undergo this experience, don’t fret. Here\u2019s how to acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you come weeks in advance or just prior to the semester, here is the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

Secure Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to circumvent lengthy travels for early classes.<\/p>\n

Upon your arrival, prioritize these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Open an account for transactions and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 essential for utilizing campus amenities, libraries, and securing student discounts. Obtain it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Imperial’s Initial Week is Key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is critical for connecting with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, check out clubs and societies, and engage in what piques your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend toward shyness, challenge yourself to join in. I made close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Navigate Smartly in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ultimately walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Establish Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite intense. Identify a comforting spot, whether a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My personal refuges are a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, museums, and enjoy spontaneous excursions around the city. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost.<\/p>\n
