Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you reach weeks prior or just as the term begins, here\u2019s what I wish I had known during my initial arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Avoid spending excessive amounts on hotels; arrange your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Prime locations disappear quickly! Aim for somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Address these essentials shortly after landing in London:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 you\u2019ll require data for navigation, so procure a UK SIM card promptly.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for gaining entry to campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The significance of your initial week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week is crucial for your student journey. It\u2019s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re reserved, encourage yourself to take part. I did and formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was memorable but chaotic. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus travel.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your cozy spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel intense, particularly at first. A comforting space is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly for relaxation.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own spots, like a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to chill out and recharge. It\u2019s more beneficial than you may realize.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee joints.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks. Spend weekends unraveling the city. Visit free museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will emerge from straying a bit!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final pointers before commencing Imperial life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a reusable bag \u2013 stores usually charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t effective in gusty weather.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in unique events \u2013 they make for great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
