The city felt vast, vibrant, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to life in London before you commence your journey at Imperial, so you can savor the city to its fullest.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the advice I wish I had received when I got here.

First Priority: Find Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by securing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best places get booked quickly. Try to find a spot close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.

Necessary Life Administration

Once you’re in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek an economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Get a UK SIM card right away to ensure you have data for navigating unfamiliar areas.

Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. A bank account is essential for everyday transactions and part-time job salaries.

Student ID Card – This card is crucial for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial: Essential for Your Journey

Your first week at Imperial is significant for your student life. It’s the chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest companions during campus tours and society events. This week sets the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my initial week, I wasn’t familiar with the Tube or buses, so I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience, but not advised. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.

Despite this, walking is still the best way to soak in the city and its culture. Oftentimes, London’s hidden treasures are discovered through exploration.

Find Your Go-To Spots

London can initially feel emotionally overwhelming. Having a comfort location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go every day to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax weekly with a movie.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These places are invaluable for relaxation and recharging.

Discover the City!

Acquaint yourself with commonly visited areas around campus and your residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locales.

Explore famous landmarks, wander free museums, and relish the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from spontaneous outings.

Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against wind-swept rain.

Join in on unusual events – they often lead to entertaining stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a typical experience at the beginning.

There’s no need to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, <a

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a breathtaking experience.
