Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If this is your upcoming reality, don’t fret. Here’s how to get settled in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you arrive well in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by booking your lodging ahead of time. I had luck on my side, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for morning classes.

Administrative matters: key tasks to handle

Once you reach London, tackle these key tasks without delay:

Money transfers – being an international student, identify a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – vital for navigation and staying connected. Acquire one immediately upon arrival.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – important for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Make sure to collect it swiftly.

Your introductory week at Imperial is significant

The first week is crucial for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Navigate London wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to stumble upon hidden treasures in the city.

Identify your relaxation spots

London can feel daunting. Discover a comforting location, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My comforting places include a local park and the O2 for movies. These spots help me relax.

Discover the city

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy impromptu strolls. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Essential advice for starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid extra charges for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you’re feeling lost; it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. You’re already ahead by reading this. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insight into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I first stepped into London, the scale of the city felt immense and daunting.
