The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to face a similar situation, there’s no need to worry. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to appreciate your new environment.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your housing promptly. I had luck on my side, but not everyone does, as the top choices vanish quickly. Strive for a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative Essentials

As soon as you land in London, focus on these key tasks:

Money transfers – International students need cost-effective options for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Vital for navigation and staying in touch. Obtain one right after you arrive.

Bank account – While some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as practical.

Starting Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-operated clubs and societies. Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to take part. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week creates the foundation for your university journey.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I was baffled by the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was a memorable experience but not one to replicate. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Favorite Spots

London can feel like a lot to handle. Having a favorite place can be comforting. Mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2 is another spot I enjoy to relax while watching a film. Seek out your own favorite places, whether it’s a coffee shop, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to take a breather and recharge.

Get Out There!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining options. Explore well-known landmarks, visit free museums, and take in the sights from a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from a little adventure off the beaten path.

Final Recommendations for Imperial Student Life

Purchase a reusable bag – Shops typically charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are ineffective against strong winds.

Participate in unique events – They create wonderful memories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s common initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my story from Imperial.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under <

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the very first time was intimidating.
