Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt unsure about where to start. If you can relate to this, don’t panic. Here’s some guidance to help you adapt to London prior to starting at Imperial, enabling you to fully embrace your new city adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here’s what I wish I had known when I first got here.

Secure Accommodation

Arrange your living space early to steer clear of costly hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the most desirable options disappear fast. Seek accommodation close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for those early classes.

Life Administration: Key Essentials to Address

Once you land in London, make these a priority:

Money Transfers: As an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card: Acquire one right away for data access and navigation in your new locale.

Bank Account: Certain banks require a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday purchases and part-time job deposits.

Student ID Card: This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student life. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to engage with over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus orientations and club events. Your first week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet overwhelming. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transport.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be intimidating, especially at the beginning. Having a go-to spot is beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another favorite place for enjoying a movie.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether that’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with your new environment surrounding campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots.

Explore popular landmarks, visit free museums, and relish the view from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most memorable moments will arise from wandering a bit off course.

Final Recommendations Before Commencing at Imperial

Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Join unusual events for unforgettable experiences.

It’s completely normal to feel disoriented at the outset; don’t fret about it.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<p class="imp

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially daunting due to its immense size and rapid tempo.
