Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, enabling you to savor your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received on arrival.

Securing accommodation

Skip expensive hotel stays by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices vanish swiftly. Strive to reside near campus or on a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes for early classes.

Managing important tasks

When you land in London, prioritize these essentials:

Money transfers – International students require an economical method to receive funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Make sure to get a UK SIM card quickly for data needed for navigation.

Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for your daily transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student life. It’s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that catch your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the framework for your university experience.

Smart travel in London

In my initial week, I didn’t grasp the workings of the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly travel.

Walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture. Uncover hidden treasures by wandering aimlessly.

Identify your favorite spots

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. A comfort zone helps – my personal haven is a local park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another go-to for relaxing with a film.

Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.

Get out and explore!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferable dining or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from a little bit of wandering!

Last pointers before embarking on student life at Imperial

Use a reusable bag to steer clear of charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Join unique events for memorable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the start.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<p class="imp-post__footer__

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London at first felt daunting, with its size and rapid rhythm.
