Stepping into London for the first time was a daunting experience. The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you are about to face this, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to starting at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To steer clear of pricey hotel bookings, organize your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices disappear quickly. Seek a place close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line to prevent long travels for early classes.<\/p>\n

Life administration: addressing the necessary tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, address these crucial tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one swiftly to avoid getting lost without data in a new city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Bank account \u2013 some banking institutions require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The inaugural week at Imperial is the most crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial holds immense importance. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you are reticent, make an effort to join in. I did, and I met some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Navigating London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.<\/p>\n

          Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures simply by exploring.<\/p>\n

          Locate your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London may feel emotionally intense initially. Establishing a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is the park near my residence, where I go every day to unwind. My second favorite is the nearby O2, where I enjoy a movie weekly.<\/p>\n

          Identify your own comfort spaces, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas can be more comforting than you may realize.<\/p>\n

          And be sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas around your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

          Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus to enjoy the view, and wander around aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from a little bit of getting lost!<\/p>\n

          Final pointers before immersing yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

          • Obtain a reusable bag \u2013 stores usually charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective against strong winds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Accept invitations to unusual events \u2013 they create fantastic stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
