The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you savor the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure accommodation

Avoid costly hotel fees by organizing living arrangements ahead of time. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck as the best options vanish quickly. Search for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative necessities: must-dos

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – as an international learner, find a trustworthy, economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you have access to data for navigation in a new environment.

Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to get it promptly.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is significant. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, classmates, and future companions. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-driven clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I formed close bonds during campus tours and society showcases. This week shapes the foundation of your university experience.

Navigate London wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit hectic, experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Walking remains a fantastic way to discover and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be quite intense. Having a retreat is beneficial – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another venue where I enjoy movies weekly. Identify your own comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to find peace and recharge.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final pointers for starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – single-use bags usually come with fees.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Participate in unique events – they make for great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco shopping trip at a time.

To hear more about my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

<p class="imp-post__footer__categories

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a whirlwind of emotions.
