The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t stress. Here is my guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to your time at Imperial, so you can appreciate the city.

Whether you’re coming in early or just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek out a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Important Life Arrangements

Once you’ve arrived in London, promptly take care of these necessities:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trusted method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation.

Bank account – digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are easy to establish and cater to students.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities and receiving student discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is critical. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies.

Even if you’re timid, attempt to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society displays. Your first week will shape your university journey.

Travel Wisely Around London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across London. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can feel intense. Find a spot that gives you comfort, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Seek out local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering off the beaten path.

Final Suggestions

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
