Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t stress. Here is my guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to your time at Imperial, so you can appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re coming in early or just ahead of term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Seek out a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve arrived in London, promptly take care of these necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trusted method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one right away for data and navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are easy to establish and cater to students.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities and receiving student discounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Even if you\u2019re timid, attempt to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society displays. Your first week will shape your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Travel Wisely Around London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across London. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Locate Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel intense. Find a spot that gives you comfort, such as a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Seek out local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering off the beaten path.<\/p>\n
