The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide, I felt lost. If you are about to face this situation, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban life.

No matter if you arrive several weeks earlier or right before the term kicks off, here’s the insight I wish I had received upon my entry.

Prioritize Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel costs by securing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices get taken up swiftly. Opt to reside near your campus or a reliable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Important Life Administration

Upon arriving in London, promptly address these vital matters:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps such as Wise or Revolut for economical money transfers.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away to ensure you’re not lost without data.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish one for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it at the earliest.

Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is pivotal for your student journey. Connect with your flatmates, fellow students, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if shyness creeps in, make an effort to join; I formed some of my closest friendships in this manner.

Be Smart When Traveling in London

At first, I had difficulty understanding the Tube or buses and wound up walking nine kilometers around London. Prevent this by getting a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nevertheless, walking remains a wonderful way to unearth hidden treasures in the city.

Identify Your Cozy Spots

London can sometimes feel emotionally intense. Discover a comforting spot, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can relax and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2, where I take time to unwind each week.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining places. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls around the city. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments of getting slightly lost.

Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use alternatives.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are not very effective against strong winds.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

It’s okay to feel disoriented; this feeling is normal at the beginning.

You aren’t required to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re coming across this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco outing at a time.

For more insights about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/international

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was truly a lot to handle.
