Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to acclimate to London life before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of being a newcomer to the city.

Whether you land weeks in advance or just prior to the term start, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The best choices disappear fast! Target a spot close to your campus or an accessible Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative Must-Dos

When you arrive in London, tackle these essentials right away:

Money Transfers – As an overseas student, discover a dependable, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Navigating a new territory is challenging without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Set up an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to join in. I connected with close friends during campus tours and society showcases. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Traveling Around London: Smart Tips

At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking is still an excellent way to discover the city’s hidden treasures.

Establish Your Favorite Spots

London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to spot helps. Mine is a local park where I relax every day. The O2, just ten minutes away, is another place I frequent weekly to enjoy a movie. Discover your own comfort zones, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.

Get Out There!

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee shops. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from aimlessly wandering.

Key Tips Before Embarking on Imperial Student Life

Bring a reusable bag – Many shops charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Embrace unusual events – They lead to great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost – That’s perfectly normal at the start.

You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to relax, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting, with its enormity and rapid pace.
