Landing in London was quite overwhelming for me at first. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive early or just in time for the term, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation First<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To avoid high hotel costs, arrange your accommodation as soon as possible. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging with early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Crucial Life Admin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, focus on these key tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 If you’re an international student, discover an economical method for sending money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Obtain one swiftly to guarantee you have data for navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and suitable for students. You\u2019ll require an account for day-to-day transactions and payment from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 This is crucial for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Significance of the First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is vital for your student journey. It\u2019s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that spark your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the atmosphere for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Travel Wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable, yet chaotic experience. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and unearth hidden gems.<\/p>\n

    Establish Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense at the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it\u2019s the park nearby and the O2 for weekly movie nights. Discover your own spots, like a caf\u00e9 or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining locations.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Last Tips Before Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas might not be effective in windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented at first; it\u2019s completely normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
