The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar scenario, don’t be anxious. Here’s how to launch your new life in London ahead of your commencement at Imperial, so you can savor your experience in the city.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the semester, here’s the guidance I wish had been offered to me.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Book your living arrangements early to evade costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a place near the campus or along a dependable Tube route to prevent lengthy travels for early morning classes.

Administrative essentials: getting the basics sorted

When you land in London, focus on these essential tasks:

Money transfers – as an overseas student, locate a trustworthy and economical way to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure you have internet access for navigation in a new city.

Bank account – digital options such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up an account for payments and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is the most vital

Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I forged some of my nearest friendships during campus exploration and society gatherings. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable but quite hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically. Still, walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and seek out hidden treasures.

Identify your cozy spots

London can feel like a lot to handle. Having a go-to place is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Discover your own spaces, such as a café or a bookstore, to unwind and recharge.

And make sure to explore!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find local grocery stores, pharmacies, green spaces, and favorite dining options. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will spring from wandering around a bit.

Final pointers before jumping into Imperial student life

Grab a reusable bag – retailers charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle in windy weather.

Participate in unique events – they can lead to great stories.

Don’t worry if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the start.

You don’t need to have everything resolved by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
