Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your studies at Imperial begin, ensuring you get to savor the city.

Whether you’re getting here early or just in time for the term’s commencement, here are the tips I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Book your housing in advance to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. Seek a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy journeys for early classes.

Essential arrangements to finalize

Once you arrive in London, attend to these necessary tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers from your home country.

UK SIM card – acquire one as soon as possible for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – consider digital banks like Monzo or Starling, which are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for transactions and part-time job income.

Student ID card – collect it promptly for access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts.

Your first week’s significance at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you meet flatmates, peers, and future buddies. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and find activities that spark your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. This initial week sets the tone for your academic journey.

Smart travel in London

In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers around London due to my inexperience with the Tube and buses. Don’t make the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and unearth hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming at first. Find a comfort zone, whether it’s a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s the park near my home and the O2 for films.

Get out and explore!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and home. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite tea or coffee spots.

Visit iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering without a specific agenda.

Last-minute tips before embracing Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket for blustery, rainy weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s typical initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when starting at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial account.

By Guest Blogger

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite daunting with its enormity and quick pace.
