Here are some tips to ease your transition into London before your studies begin at Imperial, ensuring you relish your new urban life.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before the semester begins, here\u2019s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my entry.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To steer clear of pricey hotel fees, arrange your housing in advance. I was lucky, yet not everyone is, as prime options vanish quickly. Seek a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Essential life admin: sorting out the basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon arriving in London, tackle these crucial matters without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a dependable and cost-effective method to move money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 certain banks may require a UK address, but tech-savvy banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 vital for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It\u2019s when you&#8217;ll meet flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Dive into Welcome Week activities to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that catch your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&lt;pDuring my initial week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to my uncertainty with the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically via public transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent avenue to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your go-to spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a comforting location is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I retreat to unwind. My other favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie each week.<\/p>\n<p>Discover your comfort spots, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and relax.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Find the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n<p>Check out iconic sites, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander about aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final insights before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 many shops charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against rain blown by the wind.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in unique events \u2013 they&#8217;ll provide great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Stay calm if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to have it all sorted on the first day. If you&#8217;re reading this, you&#8217;re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced my journey at Imperial.
