The city appeared enormous, noisy, and full of activity. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt somewhat disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to enjoy the city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

By arranging your stay in advance, you can avoid expensive hotel stays. I had some luck, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime spots fill up fast. Search for housing close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Address Basics

As soon as you arrive, take care of these important items:

Money transfers – International students require cost-effective methods to move money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Important for navigation and data. Get yours straight away.

Bank account – While some banks need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options.

Student ID card – This allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it without delay.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal. It’s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during random tours and society stands. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Navigate London Wisely

Initially, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking is also a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Comfort Zones

London can be quite intense. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I spend time daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another place where I relax each week. Discover your own spots, whether they’re a café or a bookstore, where you can chill and recharge.

Discover!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Locate grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will come from wandering aimlessly.

Final Thoughts

Carry a reusable bag – Stores charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas don’t hold up well in the wind.

Participate in unique events – They lead to great stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – It’s completely normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re better prepared than I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imperial/" rel

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit daunting.
