The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to adapt to your new life in London prior to beginning your studies at Imperial, so you can savor your experience in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead of time or just before the term kicks off, here’s some guidance I wish someone had shared with me upon my arrival.

Find Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky in my situation, but not everyone will be. The prime options get snatched up quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travels for morning lectures.

Essential Life Tasks

Upon getting settled, take care of these vital tasks:

Money transfers – International students need a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better conversion rates.

UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for internet access and navigation in a new locale.

Bank account – Digital banking solutions like Monzo or Starling are fast and tailored to students. Create an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it promptly.

First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies led by students. Even if you’re a bit introverted, engage to establish the right atmosphere for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, opting to walk nine kilometers to explore. Don’t make the same error I did. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to lower your travel costs. Walking is still a delightful way to uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be quite intense. Locate a calming spot to unwind, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore. My favorite places include a local park and the O2 for films.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with neighborhoods close to campus and your home. Explore nearby supermarkets, chemists, parks, and dining options. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from exploring.

Final Recommendations

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket for blustery days.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable tales.

If you feel disoriented, don’t panic; it’s perfectly normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything planned out from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better place than I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Landing in London was initially a bit daunting.
