Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re gearing up for this experience, there’s no reason for concern. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before diving into your studies at Imperial, enabling you to fully enjoy the city.

Whether you come weeks ahead of time or just before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel bills by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but many are not, as the prime options vanish swiftly. Try to find a place near your campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys for early morning classes.

Administrative tasks: managing the essential needs

Once you’re in London, tackle these necessities without delay:

Money transfers – International students need an efficient, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Having data is vital for navigating a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Bank account – While some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday spending and part-time job salaries.

Student ID card – This is crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is the most significant

The first week at Imperial is vital for your university experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led groups and societies and get involved in your interests.

Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to take part. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your inaugural week lays the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

<pThroughout my initial week, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don’t make the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.

Walking remains the best approach to absorbing the city and its culture. London boasts numerous hidden treasures that you’ll uncover by exploring.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to refresh and regroup. My second favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Discover your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spaces help you unwind and recharge more than you might realize.

And don’t forget to adventure!

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the scenic views, and meander without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting slightly lost!

Concluding tips before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

Get a reusable bag – shops frequently impose charges for single-use ones.

Buy a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fall short against wind-driven rain.

Embrace spontaneous events – they can lead to memorable stories.

Do not fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at the start.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city seemed vast, noisy, rapid, and quite daunting.
