The city appeared vast, bustling, and dynamic. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about my next steps. If you are about to undertake a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling down in London and making the most of your time before starting at Imperial.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right as the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had when I first arrived.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

To sidestep pricey hotel fees, secure your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime spots are snatched up quickly. Search for housing located near your campus or close to a reliable Tube line to prevent long commutes for early classes.

Essential Life Tasks

Once you’re in London, make these tasks your top priority:

Money Transfers – As an international student, look for a cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation in your new environment.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and potential part-time employment.

Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus amenities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Make the Most of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is vital for establishing your student experience. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university path.

Navigating London Smartly

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was unforgettable, yet chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card for discounted fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures within the city.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can sometimes be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another go-to for relaxing with a film. Identify your own spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.

Explore the City

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and home. Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and eateries you love. Visit iconic landmarks and utilize your weekends to explore. Check out free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering aimlessly.

Final Insights for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to evade the charges for single-use ones.

Consider investing in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t fare well against the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be alarmed if you feel a bit lost; this is normal at the start.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I began. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and dive into your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imper

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a remarkable experience.
