Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to go through this, take heart. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, so you can fully embrace your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotels. I got lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Essential Life Admin

Upon your arrival, take care of these tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method for transferring funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one quickly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – online banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – critical for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital. It’s the time when you’ll meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to investigate over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I formed lasting friendships during campus orientation and society gatherings. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Travel Smart in London

At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems and walked nine kilometers to explore. Don’t make the same error. Acquire a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking is still fantastic for uncovering the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle emotionally. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for films.

Get Out and Explore!

Get to know the areas surrounding both your campus and home. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus for the views. Many of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous escapades.

Additional Tips

Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.

Participate in unique events – they lead to memorable stories.

It’s completely normal to feel lost at first – don’t fret.

You don’t have to have everything planned out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was a stunning experience; the city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling.
