The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, relax. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before your studies at Imperial commence, ensuring you can relish the fresh experience of being new in this vibrant city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes kick off, here’s the guidance I wish I had when I first touched down.

First and foremost: secure a place to stay

To avoid the high costs of hotels, arrange your accommodation as soon as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best places fill up quickly. Seek a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes are not ideal for morning lectures.

Life admin: tackling the essential setups

Once you arrive in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having internet access is vital for getting around. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.

Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this allows entry to campus buildings, the library, and various student discounts. Secure it at the earliest opportunity.

Your first week at Imperial matters the most

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that catch your interest.

Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to join in. I did and met some of my closest friends during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the precedent for your university experience.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus systems, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London just to see the sights. It was chaotic but unforgettable – don’t emulate my experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more affordably.

Nevertheless, walking remains the best approach to absorb the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by strolling around.

Identify your cozy spots

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a comforting location is beneficial – my favorite is the park near my home, where I go daily to unwind. My other refuge is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly.

Find your personal spots, like a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and recharge. It’s more beneficial than you might realize.

And don’t forget to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for views, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your best adventures will come from getting a little lost!

Final reminders before you embark on your Imperial student journey

Grab a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not hold up against the wind.

Attend unusual events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it happens to everyone initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in.
