The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re in the same boat, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to help you adapt to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the process of being a newcomer in the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or just in the nick of time, here’s the counsel I wish I’d been given when I got here.

First priority: secure your accommodation

Arrange your housing well in advance to prevent costly hotel stays. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck, as the best accommodations are snatched up quickly. Aim to locate a place near your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative essentials: getting the basics sorted

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these important matters without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in a new environment.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as early as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is paramount

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your academic experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my initial week, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent method to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to location is beneficial – mine is a local park where I can relax. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for unwinding with a film.

Find your own retreats, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to rejuvenate and recharge.

And make sure to discover!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods you’ll frequently visit near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and stroll aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will come from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before you dive into life at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t hold up well in windy weather.

Attend unique events – they lead to amazing stories.

Don’t fret if you feel out of place – it’s perfectly normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I entered Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience.
