Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was at a loss for where to start. If you are about to embark on this journey, there\u2019s no need to fret. Here\u2019s how to kick off your new life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish everything the city has in store.<\/p>\n

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before classes commence, here\u2019s the guidance I would have appreciated.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: find a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging housing as early as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices disappear rapidly. Aim for a location that\u2019s close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Life organization: tackling the necessary basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, promptly sort out these crucial aspects:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 International students need cost-effective methods for transferring funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide decent exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new locale.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and side job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 Vital for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The first week at Imperial holds significant importance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s the time when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Take part in Welcome Week to dive into over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that captivate you.<\/p>\n

    Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I formed lasting friendships through campus excursions and society events. This week establishes the atmosphere for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my newbie week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and bus systems. Don\u2019t make the same error. Secure a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically.<\/p>\n

    That being said, walking remains a fantastic method to discover and experience hidden treasures within London.<\/p>\n

    Establish your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to place can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I unwind. Another is the O2, just a short 10-minute distance, where I enjoy watching movies weekly.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comfort zones, be it a cafe, bookshop, or riverside bench, where you can relax and reset.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and wander around without a set itinerary. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from the moments you find yourself a little lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t sufficient against gusty winds.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel confused \u2013 it\u2019s typical at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have it all sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already in a better position than I was when I entered Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
