The city appeared vast, bustling, and energetic. I felt overwhelmed, equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps. If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimatizing to London before your time at Imperial, so you can relish the city.

No matter if you land weeks in advance or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent high hotel costs by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The finest options vanish quickly! Aim for a location near your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy trips for early lectures.

Life Admin: Key Items

Address these essentials promptly after your arrival in London:

Money transfers – As an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one without delay to avoid getting lost without data.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – Vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and receiving student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and soon-to-be friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student organizations and clubs. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I made close friends during campus tours and society showcases. This week shapes your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers to discover the city. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Relaxing Spots

London may feel overwhelming. Discover a comforting location, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My preferred spots include a nearby park and the O2 for movies. These locations provide a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for enjoyment. Some of your fondest memories will come from spontaneous explorations.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.

Join unique events for memorable stories.

Don’t worry if you feel disoriented; feeling lost is common initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorized under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was intimidating.
