The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can savor the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had.

Secure Housing

Arrange accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotel fees. I was fortunate, but others may not be. Try to find a location close to campus or on a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Basic Life Administration

Upon arrival, prioritize these essentials:

Money transfers: Utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for budget-friendly international transactions.

UK SIM card: Obtain one right away for data and navigation.

Bank account: Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students.

Student ID card: Crucial for accessing campus amenities and discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, join in; I formed close friendships during campus tours and society functions.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I walked nine kilometers because I was confused about public transit. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Safe Places

London can feel daunting. Discover a comfort zone, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My favorites are a nearby park and the O2 for films.

Discover the City

Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, and preferred eateries. Explore landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will stem from your explorations.

Final Suggestions

Carry a reusable bag to avoid extra charges.

Purchase a waterproof jacket.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel lost; it’s a common feeling.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. Reading this has already put you ahead. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
