With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I was uncertain about where to begin. If you’re about to go through this experience, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before you commence at Imperial, so you can take full advantage of what the city has to offer.

Whether you’re showing up weeks in advance or just right before the term starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had when I initially got here.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Avoid spending a fortune on hotels by arranging your housing early. I was fortunate, but not everyone is, as the best options disappear quickly. Aim to find a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line – those early morning lectures can be challenging if you live over an hour away.

Essential life administration: organizing the basics

Once in London, there are several essentials to address as quickly as possible:

Transferring money – as an international student, you’ll require a reliable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut helped me avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

Obtaining a UK SIM card – lacking data can mean getting lost, which is not ideal when you’re in a new area or country. Get a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after you arrive.

Establishing a bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Open an account for daily spending and to receive payments for any part-time jobs.

Collecting your student ID card – this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, the library, and obtaining student discounts. Pick up your ID card as soon as possible.

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal

The initial week at Imperial is vital for your academic journey. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to participate. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus explorations and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating the city: travel wisely

During my initial week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic yet memorable – avoid my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses at a reduced fare.

Walking remains the best way to soak up the city and its culture. London has hidden treasures you’ll uncover by meandering.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a comfort zone helps – for me, it’s the nearby park. I visit daily to breathe and regain my composure. My other comfort zone is the O2, just a 10-minute trip, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to relax.

Discover your own spots that provide solace in the bustling city, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. Having a place to unwind and reset can be more beneficial than you think.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with your most frequented areas around campus and home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Visit iconic landmarks. Spend your weekends exploring your new city. Attend free museums. Ride a red double-decker bus for the views. Wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final pieces of advice before diving into Imperial student life

Acquire a reusable bag – supermarkets and shops frequently charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not keep you dry in the wind.

Embrace unusual events – they’ll give you the best stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this at the beginning.

You don’t have to

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I first arrived in London, the city felt vast, noisy, rapid, and somewhat daunting.
