Stepping into London was initially a lot to take in, given its scale and speed. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt disoriented. If this resonates with you, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to find your footing in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive early or just ahead of the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book a place to stay early to steer clear of pricey hotels. I was fortunate, but options vanish rapidly! Aim for somewhere near campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys.<\/p>\n

Essential tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Quickly address these key tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, consider using apps like Wise or Revolut for more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Bank account \u2013 digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are easy and cater to students. You\u2019ll require one for transactions and part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID card \u2013 this allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and various discounts. Collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          The first week is crucial for getting to know roommates, fellow students, and making friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, try to get involved. I found close friends during casual tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers. Avoid this. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Identify your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London may feel daunting. Pinpoint a favorite place, like a park or caf\u00e9, where you can unwind and recharge. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2 for films. These locations are perfect for relaxation.<\/p>\n

          Discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining options. Check out landmarks, museums, and take leisurely strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from a little wandering.<\/p>\n

          Final reminders before immersing in Imperial life<\/strong><\/h3>\n
