With just a suitcase and Google Maps as tools, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re preparing for this experience, there’s no need to stress. Here’s how to immerse yourself in London life before your journey begins at Imperial, so you can relish your new adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had known.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but options vanish swiftly. Try to secure a place close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to facilitate your morning travels.

Important Life Administration

As soon as you arrive, take care of these necessary tasks:

Money transfers – International students require cost-effective methods for moving money. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide attractive rates.

UK SIM card – Crucial for navigation and staying in touch. Acquire one immediately.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time employment.

Student ID card – This allows you access to campus resources and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week holds significant importance for meeting roommates, fellow students, and making friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, make an effort to join in. I built enduring friendships through campus tours and society activities.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometre walk. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and requesting the 18+ discount for more affordable travels. Walking is still a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be intense. Locate a cozy spot, such as a cafe or park, to unwind and recharge. My favorite locations are a local park and the O2 for films.

Discover the City

Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unplanned escapades.

Last Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to dodge fees associated with single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas struggle in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

If you feel disoriented at first, don’t fret; it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure with each bus ride and Tesco visit.

For more insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing My initial arrival in London felt daunting due to its size and rhythm.
