Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in the same boat, don\u2019t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before you commence your journey at Imperial, ensuring you can relish your new city life.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here\u2019s what I wish I had been aware of when I first landed here.<\/p>\n

Prevent costly hotel nights by sorting out accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. The prime options disappear quickly, so strive to secure a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, promptly take care of these necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, look for a trustworthy method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan quickly to navigate your new environment effectively.<\/li>\n

Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting Around London: Smart Travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I was confused by the Tube and buses, causing me to trek nine kilometers across London. While it was unforgettable, it\u2019s not the best approach. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Find Your Favorite Spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Having a comfortable location is beneficial. For me, it\u2019s a local park and the O2 for movies. Locate your own comfort zones, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or bench by the river, to unwind and rejuvenate.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from spontaneous adventures.<\/p>\n
