Stepping into London for the very first time was intense. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need for concern. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace the novelty of being in this city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just moments before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish had been shared with me when I got here.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent hefty hotel charges by finding housing ahead of time. I got lucky, but not everyone has that fortune since the prime options vanish swiftly. Seek a dwelling close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travels for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative life: managing essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, promptly tackle these vital tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 International students require a trustworthy method for receiving funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Ensure you have connectivity for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data package shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 Some banks may demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial plays a critical role in your experience as a student. You\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies led by students. Even if you feel timid, try to engage. I formed meaningful friendships during campus tours and at society booths. This week will establish the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In the beginning, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Nonetheless, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover the city\u2019s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your comforting spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing. Having a place of comfort is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another location where I relax weekly with a film. Identify your own spots, whether it\u2019s a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate and reset.<\/p>\n

    Roam the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you often visit near campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues. Tour iconic sights, explore complimentary museums, and enjoy a trip on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final suggestions for starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 Stores usually charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 Umbrellas aren\u2019t reliable during windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 They create fantastic stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 It\u2019s perfectly normal at the outset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you\u2019re seeing this, you\u2019re already further along than I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
