The city appeared vast, noisy, and dynamic. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate everything the city has to offer.

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options disappear fast! Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to early lectures.

Essential life administration

Once you’re in London, promptly take care of the following:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away to get data for navigation in this unfamiliar city.

Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – critical for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you will meet housemates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for activities that interest you.

Even if you’re somewhat introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I found some of my closest companions during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart travel in London

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the most effective way to embrace the city’s culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures simply by strolling.

Discover your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a park close to my home where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.

Identify your own spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and recharge.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with your new environment near campus and home. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting slightly lost!

Final suggestions before starting at Imperial

Use a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in windy weather.

Join unique events – they provide great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does at first.

There’s no need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I entered Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a profound experience.
