Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before starting at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of your new urban life.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re arriving ahead of schedule or just in time for the term, here\u2019s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Prioritize Finding Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that experience. The prime locations are snatched up quickly, so aim for housing close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize travel time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Handle Crucial Life Admin Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you settle in London, focus on these essential tasks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, find an affordable method for transferring funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 Acquire one immediately for internet access and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 Some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick services that cater to students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 This is vital for campus entry, library access, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal. It\u2019s the opportune moment to familiarize yourself with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re reserved, make an effort to connect. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and societal gatherings. Your first week determines the atmosphere of your university journey.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Travel Wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable transport. Walking remains a superb means to uncover the city and its gems.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to spot for comfort is beneficial. Mine is a local park where I prefer to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another favorite of mine for movies and relaxation. Identify your own havens, whether they be a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, for refreshing and recharging.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wander the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food establishments. Check out iconic sights and complimentary museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from aimless exploration.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas aren\u2019t effective in strong winds.<\/li>\n<li>Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented; it\u2019s entirely normal at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on your first day.
