Stepping into London for the first time, the city felt vast and daunting, with its quick rhythm and noisy atmosphere. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you\u2019re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to life in London before you begin at Imperial, ensuring you can relish your new city adventure.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive well in advance or just right before classes, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had when I first came here.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To avoid the high costs of hotels, arrange your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but opportunities can slip away quickly, so aim for a location near your campus or close to a reliable Tube line to minimize long travel times for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: getting the essentials organized<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, make sure to sort out these key essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, look for a dependable, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 navigating a new city without data can be difficult. Acquire a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after arriving.<\/li>\n
  • Setting up a bank account \u2013 while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it at your earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student experience. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made close friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: be smart about travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, as I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I walked across London for nine kilometers. It was chaotic yet unforgettable\u2014don’t follow in my footsteps. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transport.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Initially, London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place is beneficial\u2014mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comforting spaces, whether that\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And don\u2019t forget to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the commonly visited spots around your campus and home. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery, and explore without a specific plan. Some of your favorite memories will come from moments when you get a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t fare well against windy rain.<\/li>\n
    • Attend unique events \u2013 they can lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out right away. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I first enrolled at Imperial\u2014so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
