The city appeared enormous, bustling, and dynamic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the semester kicking off, here’s the wisdom I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent pricey hotel fees by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the prime choices are snatched up swiftly. Seek a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Important Life Administration

Once you arrive, tackle these important tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away for mobile data and navigation in your new setting.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it at your earliest convenience.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for your student life. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved. I forged close friendships during the campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I was puzzled by the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and seek the 18+ discount for more economical travel. Walking remains a wonderful method to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Favorite Spots

London can feel overwhelming. Discover a comforting location like a park, cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the O2 for films. These locations help you unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Spot supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries. Take trips to iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy unplanned strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from becoming slightly lost.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas fall short in blustery conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable tales.

Do not stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Landing in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
