Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, relax. Here’s a guide to set your new life in London on the right course before your time at Imperial begins, enabling you to savor the excitement of being new to the city.

Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term to begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure accommodation

Unless you want to rack up hotel expenses, make arrangements for your housing early. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck, as the best options fill up quickly. Aim to find a place near campus or close to a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative essentials: getting the basics sorted

Once you settle in London, tackle these essential tasks promptly:

Money transfers – as an international student, ensure you have a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away for mobile data and navigation in unfamiliar surroundings.

Bank account – some traditional banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus premises, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Obtain this at your earliest convenience.

Your first week at Imperial is vital

During your initial week at Imperial, you’ll find it crucial. It’s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and immerse yourself in your interests.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I connected with some of my closest friends during random campus explorations and society booths. Your first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to lower your Tube and bus expenses.

Walking remains the most effective way to experience the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures while meandering.

Discover your comfort zones

London may feel emotionally daunting at first. It’s helpful to have a comfort zone – mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second spot is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly.

Identify your own comforting locations, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas will assist you in relaxing and rejuvenating.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Explore renowned landmarks. Dedicate weekends to uncovering your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from a little lost exploration!

Final pointers before immersing in the Imperial student experience

Get a reusable shopping bag – stores often charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t shield you from the wind.

Embrace unique activities – they create the best tales.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my initial arrival in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, rapid, and daunting.
