Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to commence. If you are about to go through this, have no fear. Here’s my guidance on adapting to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, enabling you to savor the city to its fullest.

Whether you get here a few weeks early or just before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received when I first arrived.

Top Priority: Find Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel bills by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that chance, as the best choices get snapped up quickly. Try to secure a place close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Key Life Admin Tasks

Upon settling in London, promptly tackle the following:

Money transfers – As an international student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Tools like Wise or Revolut provide beneficial exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Ensure you have data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card at the earliest.

Bank account setup – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open a bank account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire your student ID card without delay.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial plays a vital role in your student journey. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, check out more than 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in areas that interest you.

Even if you’re shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and it resulted in friendships formed during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the atmosphere for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, I walked nine kilometers across London, which was memorable but hectic. Avoid my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly Tube and bus travel.

Walking continues to be a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures as you roam.

Find Your Comfort Zones

Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Discovering a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s a nearby park where I relax each day. My second spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to unwind.

Identify your own comforting locations, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you relax and rejuvenate in the busy city.

Don’t Forget to Explore!

Acquaint yourself with frequently visited spots around campus and your residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Meander without a plan; some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a little lost!

Final Insights Before Diving into Imperial Student Life

Carry a reusable bag – to avoid fees for single-use bags in stores.

Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are futile against wind-driven rain.

Participate in unusual events – they often lead to the best stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented initially – it’s a typical experience.

You don’t have to have all the answers on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences,

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London, the city appeared immense and intimidating, with its loud and brisk environment.
