Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared massive, noisy, and frenetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. Should you find yourself in a similar predicament, have no fear. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London prior to beginning your studies at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of the new city experience.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive a bit early or just at the term’s onset, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had gotten upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Avoid high hotel prices by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the best spots get booked quickly. Try to find accommodation near your campus or not far from a dependable Tube line, since long commutes can be challenging for those early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Life admin: tackling the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, focus on these tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a dependable and economical method to transfer funds from your home nation. Services like Wise or Revolut can help avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigating a new environment. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan as early as possible.<\/li>\n
  • Setting up a bank account \u2013 some banks may demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Create an account for daily expenses and part-time employment payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is necessary for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain this as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial holds great significance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s a chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in what sparks your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be reserved, try to get involved. I did, and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    <pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses at a more favorable rate.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to take in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, London can seem daunting. Discovering a comforting spot can help \u2013 for me, it\u2019s a local park. I visit daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, located just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own comfortable spaces, like a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or park bench. These areas can provide essential relaxation and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n

    And make sure to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and at home. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee places.<\/p>\n

    Check out notable landmarks, visit complimentary museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the sights, and meander without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from those moments of getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before immersing yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops often charge for single-use options.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can be ineffective against rain driven by the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unconventional events \u2013 they often yield the best stories.<\/li>\n
    • Do not fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s a common feeling at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You aren\u2019t expected to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
