The city appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt quite disoriented. If you’re preparing for this, don’t panic. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your housing

Arrange your accommodation early to dodge pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the prime locations disappear quickly. Strive for somewhere in close proximity to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to have shorter commutes for early classes.

Administrative essentials: organizing the must-haves

Here are several must-haves to set up as soon as you step into London:

Money transfers – as an international student, locate a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – navigating a new area is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Bank account – while some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and friendly towards students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time income.

Student ID card – this is vital for accessing campus structures, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

The first week at Imperial is the key

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-driven clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to engage. I did and forged close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and found myself walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.

Walking is also a fabulous way to soak in the city and uncover hidden delights.

Discover your sanctuary

London can feel emotionally daunting at first. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. Another place is the local O2, where I catch movies each week.

Identify your own comforting spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas are precious for unwinding and recharging.

And don’t forget to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final recommendations before embarking on your Imperial journey

Get a reusable shopping bag – many stores charge for disposable bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail in breezy conditions.

Embrace unusual events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better place than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imper

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in.
