The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to embark on this adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can appreciate the city.

Whether you touch down weeks in advance or just ahead of the term, here’s the guidance I wish I’d had.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The prime spots disappear quickly, so aim for a location close to the campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes.

Administrative Essentials

Upon your arrival, focus on these priorities:

Money transfers: As an international student, seek out a budget-friendly method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card: Acquire one promptly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account: Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating to students. You’ll need an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card: This is vital for accessing university buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I made wonderful friends through campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

<pDuring my first week, I struggled with public transport and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but disorganized. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a comforting location, like a park or café, to unwind and recharge. My favorites are a local park and the O2, where I relax with a film. Discover spots that bring serenity in the city.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining locales you enjoy. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and relish the views from a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unplanned escapades.

Final Advice for Imperials

Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees associated with single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t fare well in strong winds.

Join in on quirky events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost; it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything figured out from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already better off than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

Discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imperial/" rel="

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was a whirlwind experience.
