Arriving in London for the first time was overwhelming. The city felt vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to get settled in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Find accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your living arrangements early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, though not everyone has the same fortune. Search for housing close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Managing essentials: life administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon reaching London, tackle these necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method for money transfers. Applications like Wise or Revolut assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly for data and navigation in a new city.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and supportive of students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus, utilizing libraries, and availing student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is essential. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to join in. I did and formed tight bonds during campus tours and society showcases. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in London.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be daunting, particularly at first. Having a comforting space is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park. I go there daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just a short 10-minute stroll away, where I enjoy a film weekly. Discover your own comforting places, like a caf\u00e9 or bookstore, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and your home. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Final advice before immersing in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable shopping bag \u2013 shops frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t effective in windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in \u2018unusual\u2019 events \u2013 they make for amusing stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when beginning at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
