Arriving in London was initially a bit daunting due to its sheer size and rapid pace. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to experience this, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new city experience.<\/p>\n

Whether you come weeks in advance or right before the semester, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received when I got here.<\/p>\n

Secure a Living Space<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel expenses by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has this fortune, as top locations disappear quickly. Look for a place close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

When you arrive in London, focus on these key tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Acquire one right away for data and navigation in an unfamiliar area.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Establish one for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 Crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. Make connections with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that catch your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re timid, challenge yourself to engage. I forged some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting Around London: Travel Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I walked nine kilometers through London due to uncertainty about the Tube and buses. It was quite an experience but also hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture, unearthing hidden treasures along the journey.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can initially be emotionally heavy. Find a comforting location, such as a nearby park, to relax and regain your composure. For me, it\u2019s a park near my residence and the O2 for weekly movie outings.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own places of comfort, whether it\u2019s a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to help you decompress in the sprawling metropolis.<\/p>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee establishments.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a plan. Some of your fondest memories will come from moments of delightful detours!<\/p>\n

    Final Suggestions Before Immersing in Imperial Student Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas fare poorly against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they provide excellent stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel lost \u2013 that\u2019s a common experience at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, secure your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
