The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a like situation, don’t panic. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to revel in your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just as the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me during my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation First

Steer clear of costly hotel stays by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best accommodations get snatched up fast, so try to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes for early classes.

Vital Life Administration

Once you’re in London, focus on these tasks:

Money Transfers – International students require budget-friendly options for transferring funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide superior rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain one swiftly for data and navigation in your new environment.

Bank Account – While some banks insist on a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID Card – Crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is pivotal for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I forged close friendships through campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I found the Tube and buses challenging, which resulted in a nine-kilometer walk across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains an excellent method to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Areas

London can be emotionally daunting. Having a relaxation spot is beneficial – mine is a local park. I go there daily to unwind. My second location is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy a movie. Discover your own refuges, like a café or bookstore, to recharge and rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining venues. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for sweeping views. Some of your cherished memories will come from wandering a bit!

Concluding Tips for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas don’t hold up well in the wind.

Join unusual events – they lead to memorable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London story one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
