The city seemed immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s a guide to adapting to London life before your time at Imperial, ensuring you can embrace the experience wholeheartedly.

Regardless of whether you’re early or arriving just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received when I got here.

Secure Accommodations

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but choices can vanish quickly. Aim for a spot close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Important Life Arrangements

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – International students need inexpensive methods to receive funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Data is essential for getting around. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible.

Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are speedy and suitable for students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Get it as quickly as you can.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week sets the stage for your university adventure.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I was baffled by the Tube and buses, leading me to trek nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable, but not a smart choice. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still excellent for uncovering hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel daunting, particularly at the start. A sanctuary is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I frequent it daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, merely ten minutes away, where I enjoy a movie each week. Discover your own comfortable places, like a cafe or bookstore, for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Discover the City

Get to know your new environment. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops. Visit well-known landmarks, explore free museums, and take spontaneous strolls. Many of your most cherished memories will arise from minor detours.

Final Insights for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – Shops impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are ineffective during gusty weather.

Join unique events – They create wonderful stories.

Don’t stress if you feel adrift – It’s common at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was initially a lot to take in.
