The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. I was overwhelmed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps. If you are about to embark on this journey, have no fear. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to life in London prior to your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban adventure.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Sidestep expensive hotels by organizing your living arrangements early. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly, so aim to locate a spot near your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels for early morning classes.

Important Life Administration

Upon reaching London, swiftly handle these necessities:

Money transfers – International students require a dependable method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new environment.

Bank account – Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are ideal for students and easy to establish, essential for everyday transactions and part-time employment.

Student ID card – This is vital for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for your experience as a student. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led organizations and clubs. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week shapes your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper transportation. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be quite daunting. Identify a comforting place, like a park, café, or bookstore, to relax and recharge. My favorites are a local park and the O2 for watching movies. These spots provide a way to unwind amid the bustling city.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Check out nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to places for food or drinks. Explore renowned landmarks, free museums, and ride a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering without an itinerary.

Final Recommendations for Imperial Student Life

Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.

Join unconventional events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a normal feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything solved on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journeys, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Contributor

Tagged <a href="https

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time felt like an intense experience.
